Because of the way our reservation system is designed it is not practical to email borrowers in advance that their items have been requested for return.
A request could be made on your loan at any point while you have the item, right up to the point where you attempt to renew it. For example if you were to borrow a 1 week loan, that item could be reserved and that reservation could be cancelled (or the request could be fulfilled by an alternative copy of the book) several times during that week, potentially resulting in conflicting emails. The only time that you would need to know that your item has been reserved is when you attempt to renew it, and your library account can provide this information.
Your library account already includes real time information about the status of your loans so if you are managing your library account correctly, sending additional information is unnecessary. We email borrowers 48 hours before their items are due for return as a reminder. If you require your loans for longer we recommend renewing at this point. If your items are not reserved they will renew for either 7 days or 28 days (depending on the item) from that point. If the item has been reserved you have 48 hours to copy any relevant information from the book before returning it.
When borrowing a book the first return date that you are given is the only period of time you can guarantee that you will have the book. If another student requests an item you have on loan we will never ask you to return it before its current due date but you will not be able to renew it, so please do not borrow resources with the belief that you can keep renewing them until you no longer need them.
